    Description

    Introduction

Business degrees are an incredible asset. But they don't guarantee you'll have a successful career.

There are so many situations you didn't learn about in school where you'll face an attack, challenge or opportunity. And these can catch you totally unprepared. This is where this course comes in...ensuring you're ready for the unexpected, with powerful advice you can immediately put into practice. These are the essential life skills you need in business.

Who am I and why am I teaching this course?

I'm Bruce. Most of my career has been in the corporate world, progressing to the level of CEO at different companies. I've been an executive for the past 25+ years.

In 2010, I switched from working at large corporations to creating new businesses, founding my own successful strategic consulting business, along with cofounding a major mental health enterprise (250 therapists) plus a retail-based offroad  motorcycle business. I've since sold these and I'm focusing on teaching.

For fun, while working in my consulting business, I taught courses on entrepreneurship, strategic planning, marketing analytics, advertising & promotion, advanced marketing, sales, communications and several other business topics at the college and university level.

This course however, covers situations, problems, challenges and opportunities that aren't broached in school. I'm passing on to you the knowledge and insights I've learned over 45 years of business, including examples of when I've messed up.

If you like, please take a look at my first Beyond The MBA course entitled "CEO's Masterclass - HOW TO FAST TRACK YOUR CAREER" where I provide insider intel on landing the right job.

Fun Fact: I raced on local motocross tracks in Montreal during my teens and early twenties. Now, in my late sixties, I still love the thrill of riding race-ready offroad motorcycles.

    Your journey in this course

I wish I could tell you there is a logical flow with the course sections. But I can't.

Each section, and its composite lectures, are standalone topics. The good news? You can view the sections in any order.

It is worth completing each section since you never know when you'll face the workplace situation I'm covering in these lectures.

This Course's Main Objective: to show you how to adroitly deal with unexpected attacks, challenges and opportunities in the workplace.

    Sub-objectives:

    1. The fastest way to succeed is to impress the senior management and executive teams. In the Win When Presenting to Executives lecture, I explain how senior managers are different and how that knowledge will make you a stand-out employee when presenting.

    2. It took me a while to realize that some people will throw a grenade on the table when leaving a meeting. It's pretty sly if you don't realize they're doing it. I'll explain what it means, show you how to recognize when it's happening and let you know how to deal with it.

    3. Can you fake it until you make it in business? I'll give you 3 questions to ask yourself to determine if you've got that "faking it" ability. Hot tip: don't get caught.

    4. Confidence. Sometimes it can be elusive, regardless of your role in the company. In the confidence section of lectures I bring in a counselling therapist to speak to us about two methods of increasing confidence that stick and much, much more. Did you know that most of us have created self-confidence assassins we aren't even aware of?

    5. We'll explore 3 factors that are critically important for building employee satisfaction and loyalty to you, and the company. We'll also examine methods to create teams that are so strong others will want to join.

    6. I've learned that you can be verbally attacked, in front of others, when you least expect it. Typically, it's  an attempt at character assassination. You'll need to choose your comeback strategy by defusing, deflecting and/or discrediting your assassin.

    7. Performance reviews are stressful, usually because of the potential for the unknown. The Ace Your Performance Review lecture identifies 5 things you need to do before you meet with your boss.

    8. In the Words Great Leaders Use lecture we look at weak words all great leaders avoid, and the substitutions they use whether speaking or writing.

    9. What would we do without clients? Unfortunately, they can drive you nuts, especially when it comes to pricing and payment. Here's a lecture about standing firm with problematic clients.

    10. Time Bandits. They're common at every workplace. And they could contribute to your stress level and your ability to perform at your peak. This lecture identifies who they are and how to deal with them.

    11. No-one likes a Suck-Up (but almost everyone sucks up to the boss on occasion). We'll explore several sucking up strategies and evaluate them in terms of effectiveness and sliminess. You decide how far you take it.

    12. Going out with coworkers for drinks can be a wonderful way to make the right impression. But it can be fraught with risk. This lecture includes my simple rules for a night out or meal with coworkers, bosses, and clients.

    13. Firing employees can also be taxing on you. We look at the three most common reasons for termination (cost cutting, immediate dismissal for doing something wrong, and the 3 strikes you're out scenario) and identify the best approaches for termination.

    14. Is there anything more frustrating than the boss (or a coworker) taking credit for your work? We'll examine different situations and the ways you can deal with them. The #1 rule to remember? Calmness wins.

    15. Using profiling to understand your boss and coworkers. These are personality types I've encountered in 45+ years in the workforce. In the lecture, we look at how you deal with each type i.e.: should they be your ally? I started it as a tongue-in-cheek exercise for fun, but there is good meat here for understanding others around the meeting room table.

    Final thoughts

This course focuses on: a) your career development, b) embracing leadership roles, and c) augmenting what you learned in your MBA, BBA or Bachelor of Commerce. It will help anyone at any level who manages people; especially if you're looking to get ahead and become a memorable leader and role model.

If there's anything you would like me to include in this course, let me know and I'll do my best to add it.

And finally, if you're not convinced the insights and advice in my course will help your performance in leadership roles, you have a 100% money-back guarantee within the first 30 days of enrolling.

    I'm delighted you're here.

    Instructor's Courses
Beyond The MBA courses offer business advice for the real world, from an accomplished CEO. My goal is for you to learn how to fast track your career based on what I've learned in my drive to become a CEO. When I completed my MBA my biggest disappointment was the lack of courses about nuances, barriers and relationships in business - things I had to learn by trial and error throughout my career. I'll help you skip the trial and error part. My courses will teach you how to remove roadblocks, build your confidence, increase your influence, deal with difficult people and capitalize on (often unobvious) opportunities. Kind regards,H. Bruce Jones, Entrepreneur, Professor and Semi-Retired CEOIntroduction: The BEYOND THE MBA courses teach you the insider knowledge to recognize and capitalize on opportunities for success. I’ve seen things, heard things and learned things in my climb to the CEO position and I’m here to share what I’ve learned.I chose BEYOND THE MBA as the name for the program since I believe that an MBA, BBA or BComm can only take you so far. As great as these programs are, they do not offer courses on impressing your bosses, dealing with workplace stress, managing office politics, gaining influence, developing allies, neutralizing opponents, firing non-performers and much more. I cover these topics using advice, tips and personal business stories.Essentially, my courses provide you with the insider knowledge to recognize and capitalize on opportunities for success. Spoiler Alert: you don’t have to be a tyrant to get ahead.Who my courses are for:- People who want to lead and have influence wherever they work.- University and College students entering the business worldWhat's my teaching style?Story-Based: real world examples based on my experiences including lessons I learned and advice for dealing with similar situations.Honest: I tell you what worked for me, where things went wrong, and why. (For example, one of my lectures will be called "I was fired - Did I say the wrong thing?")Diverse: Advice is derived from my experience in both public and private corporations as well as my 3 successful start-ups since 2010. As CEO of a fourth start-up, I shut the company down just prior to launch when infighting among my executive team members made it untenable (I am considering using that as an example of a business "gone wrong").Professional: University/college professor, Educator of the Year (Oulton Career College), MBA and Bachelor of EducationTeaching testimonialsEducator of the Year: "Bruce shows great leadership, inspiration and passion for the subjects he teaches and the students he mentors. He believes in sharing his own personal experiences, both good and bad - his perception is that it is important to also share experiences where things went wrong in his own career to emphasize that things can and will go wrong, how it can impact your success overall and most importantly - how to bounce back.I have overheard his students on multiple occasions, selling the program to other students...". Rachel Pletz, Director of Education, Oulton College (Career College)"Thank you for being a powerful and positive impact in my life. Just the little bit of time I spent in your presence gave me a look at how to be professional. How to treat others with Love and Respect. And most of all, you showed me how to make things fun." Raphael Lajoie, Multiple Business Owner"Bruce is an amazing teacher and mentor, he really knows how to motivate and inspire his students and peers, and he always has a smile on his face.It really never felt like work, even though we learned so much valuable information and skills from him and accomplished many things over our time together...". Shane Spicer, Entrepreneur"He knows how to keep people engaged and wanting more. I made an effort not to miss Bruce's class because it was always interesting, engaging and enlightening.Bruce is very down to earth, smart, witty, and most of all caring.I will miss him for his personality, his practical know-how and his wealth of business knowledge." Kerri MacLeod, Sales ProfessionalCareer highlights: VP Corporate Marketing of a billion-dollar gaming company (AL), VP Strategy of a successful ad agency (Revolution Strategy), CEO of a market intelligence and strategy company (Omnifacts), CEO of a marketing advisory business (Bruce Jones & Associates Ltd.), and founder/co-founder of 3 successful startups launched between 2010 and 2015 (industries were mental health, competition off-road motorcycles, and business consulting).Along with mentoring my students, I’ve recently become a mentor helping my clients advance in their careers (people just like you).Work testimonials"Bruce has been a mentor of mine since the beginning of my career and I was lucky enough to cross paths with him over the years in various positions. If you have a meeting with Bruce, you will walk away feeling positive and enlightened. He has great strengths in research, marketing, strategy and sales, but the passion and approach he brings is what truly makes him such a successful leader." Julie Levesque, Vice President, International Packaged Goods Company"I had the pleasure to work with Bruce for number of months when he was an interim Chief Marketing Officer with (company name withheld) Bruce was very collaborative, insightful, thorough in his approach and always delivered as promised. He was a great listener, connected well with folks, and looked for win/ win solutions. He clearly is very knowledgeable and experienced in the marketing field. I learned from him. I must add, Bruce is a real delight to work with; extremely humorous and at the same time very professional." Sherry Thompson, Retired Chief human Resources Officer, Utility Organization"Bruce has a terrific, collaborative facilitation style and offered thoughtful insight in determining the best strategic course of action for many of our clients. I highly recommend him for any facilitation exercise or discovery session where the desired outcome is mapping out sound strategic direction." Terry Riedle, CEO of Several Organizations"I had the pleasure of working directly for Bruce while he was the CEO of (company name withheld). Bruce was strategic, energetic, insightful, and results driven, and a great mentor during my time with the company. I learned a great deal from Bruce..." Darin Steeves, Insurance Industry Executive"Bruce is an excellent leader who generates excitement, interest, and enthusiasm among his team. He is a strong marketer, a clear thinker, and a great individual. I consider Bruce one of a few key mentors in my career, a person who taught me much about managing people and about running a business. His leadership of (company name withheld) directly shaped my views on business, and I grew as a manager during that time." Donald Barnes, Senior ExecutiveAcademically, I have a Bachelor of Education plus an MBA in Marketing and Management. In my spare time, I've been a Commerce Faculty Professor at Mt. Allison University as well as Oulton Career College, both on Canada's east coast. In fact, the Stuff You Should Know series of lectures originated from my focus on preparing students for the realities of business. For fun - On a personal note, my family and I enjoy our coastal home overlooking Canada's warmest sandy beach (unbelievably warm for Canada, with water temperatures up to 29 degrees Celsius, 84 degrees Fahrenheit - you'd think I worked for the province's tourist bureau). And finally, every chance I get, I take my beloved KTM motorcycle exploring the back trails around the province of New Brunswick.
