One of the key characteristics of a game designer is the ability to understand the function of different elements in a game and understand why this function works. Everything from the gameplay to its specific mechanics, from the challenges to the design of the stages and the flow of the story must have their justification for their existence, and exactly understanding and realizing this reason and justification is the job of the game designer.
