  • Description

If you've never used an oscilloscope before, you may be wondering what exactly their purpose is. In this 70-minute production video course with audio expert Larry Holcombe, he'll share with you many useful applications for this powerful audio tool. With topics ranging from audio analysis and sample layering to assisting with loudness and checking phase, these videos will help you gain a deeper knowledge of what you're doing to audio when you process it, which in turn will help you to make more informed decisions about said processing. These videos are for intermediate pro audio producers and engineers.

Larry begins by showing how to analyze various aspects of a kick drum with the scope, such as the length of the tail, the fundamental pitch, and the level of the transient. With this knowledge, you'll have a better idea of how to create a similar kick sound in your own productions. You'll also learn how, when layering two kick samples together, you can check the scope to ensure of proper phase coherence.

Next, Larry explores how the scope can help you better understand common audio processing, such as compression, transient-shaping, and saturation, making you more informed in general when employing such effects. Then discover how the scope can help you understand the important phase relationship between the kick and bass. Thomas also shows you tips for setting attack times when side-chaining the kick and bass for achieving a tight, pumping effect.

See how transients (and their energy) play a role in front/back perspective in a mix with the help of the scope. And finally, Thomas demonstrates how, by visualizing the mix at different points, we can squeeze out as much loudness as possible when desired.

The oscilloscope is truly a powerful tool with dozens of uses - a Swiss army knife of audio analysis. This music production course will teach you how it can help you create better recordings, make informed processing decisions, and generate more effective mixes. Don't wait any longer to embrace this instrument of audio comprehension... watch "Using an Oscilloscope for Music Production Explained®" now!

It's okay but I felt stuck at the start when the instructor said he was using an oscilloscope that costs £69. Made it difficult to follow along with as I didn't have that plugin.

    It helped me a lot!

I really enjoyed this. Although I can't really see myself using an oscilloscope, Larry is paid to be an educator, and for educational purposes, having these visual illustrations is really helpful and unusually insightful. There are even a few 'a-ha' moments, such as the counter-intuitive idea that an Attack of 0ms can actually lead to an enhancement of transient information if using certain compressor types. The oscilloscope proves this - so you won't be doubting whether the educator is mistaken - and it's just really interesting stuff to know. This course is snappy and to the point, so I got through it quite fast . This might be because I've watched so many of Larry's other courses, however, and many of these points have been covered elsewhere. In any case, I will definitely be giving this one a re-watch to better absorb some of the points.
