  • Description

Electronic Music guru and producer Morgan Potruff shows you how to produce a track in the style of Marshmello! See how to create a professional sounding electronic track from scratch, with explanations all along the way. You also get the individual tracks to experiment with and remix.

Morgan begins by welcoming you and then starts it all off with in-depth videos on drum sound design and programming, followed by enlightening tutorials on crafting different bass sounds, sequencing them, and making them fit in the mix.

Impactful risers are then created and programmed for added excitement and movement to the song, as well as build ups and more. After additional mixing insights, Morgan shows how to fine-tune the balance of the melody layers, as well as the risers and transitions, including how to give greater clarity and impact to the production by shaping sounds with leveling, EQ and effects.

Wrapping it all up, Morgan adds in the vocal elements including how to edit, arrange and mix them with harmonies into a fully polished production. See the individual tutorial descriptions for more detailed info.

I was really interested in this course when I first went into it. I was excited about understanding the processes, sound design and arrangement for a Marshmello style track. I'll say first that I do really appreciate most of this course. It teaches a lot of great sound design techniques, laying down drums. There's a lot of great individual concepts that are put together. But here's where the course falls short. First off I didn't watch the last three videos because I was frustrated that the course didn't cover things like a complete arrangement, where to put things in the arrangement by phrases, making an outro, parts in between the verses, 2nd verse, 2nd builds, doing a 2nd drop with changes to make the track stay interesting and cohesive. There was only one part I remember where he gives an quick guide to make a lead sound that's reminiscent of Marshmello, other than that I'm not sure what the course was aiming for. There were also no parallel examples given to any Marshmello tracks or which sounds of his he was recreating. The course also uses third party VSTs like Serum and Kick 2 which isn't game breaking, but I can imagine can be frustrating for people who don't have those going into this. This also doesn't cover mastering so what you'll be left with is a partial track with an intro, somewhat of a build, and a drop and even then I had to freeze the screen to see how he arranged it. I do want to reiterate that the course does have a good amount of cool sound design ideas, like the snare with the reverb blip, the sound design for the lead using serum and he does talk a lot about the theory behind his decisions. But overall the end result of the track feels far from professional, commercial or Marshmello quality and is incomplete.
