Season Premier: Earth as a dynamic system

    What You'll Learn?

    • How did the Earth arrive at its present physical-chemical-biological state?
    • Basics of the origin, structure, composition and dynamics of Earth.
    • Understand the materials that make up our planet, and how they operate and interact in different processes.
    • We will focus on major events in Earth history as recognized in the rock record
    • Special emphasis is placed on the major steps in the evolutionary history of life

    Who is this for?

    Description

This online training program is dedicated to sharing the knowledge, tools and resources you will need to change your perspective of our place in the Universe and to also have fun in an inquiry-based way.

We call our online platform the Collaborative for Research in Origins (CRiO). Indeed, it is collaborative, but it is also credible, creative and loaded with online content from a real researcher.
    Prof. Dr. Stephen Mojzsis

    Who teaches the courses?

    • The CRiO online training program is exclusively offered to you by Prof. Dr. Stephen Mojzsis, a leading geologist, educator, writer and researcher.

    • Besides his active engagement in research and publication of scientific results, he is a science communicator.

    • His outreach activities include numerous television interviews and documentaries such as the PBS programs Nova, H2O-the molecule that made us, Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, as well many others in the US, UK, France, Canada, Japan and elsewhere in the world.

    • He regularly participates in research lectures at professional conferences and workshops, and holds public presentations throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

    • Research from his laboratory group and collaborators is regularly published in professional journals including Nature, Science, the Astrophysical Journal, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Astrobiology, Lithos and many others.

Is the CRiO online training program right for me?

    • Is your passion to acquire better scientific knowledge of the natural world? To gain a firmer grasp of new research as it unfolds? To understand what these discoveries actually mean? Or perhaps even to get advice on how to navigate the difference between the mythological world view and the scientific world view?

    • Whether you’re an ambitious beginner, budding scientist, active researcher, armchair enthusiast, retiree, consultant or artist of life, the CRiO online institute offers you the credible content you have been looking for. CRiO does this without the irrelevant bells and whistles and philosophical arguments, and gets right to what matters in the subject.

    Why join?
    4 reasons
why the CRiO online training program is the best choice for You:

    • CURIOUS: We are here because we desire to seek out and share knowledge just for the pleasure of doing so. People like you who are curious about science do this because they want to know the answers to the mysteries of the natural world.

    • CREDIBLE: Credibility in science is based on the method-based investment of working towards a reliable and testable picture of how the universe works. Ingenuity, experience, and perception are decisive in this endeavor, but there is no substitute for meticulous effort and healthy skepticism.

    • CREATIVE: Science creates in ways that differ from the humanities and its disciplines art, music, and literature. These are inspired toward innovation by using imagination to portray the real or imagined. Scientists instead build explanations by linking together bits of information in a way that makes sense - to construct what are known as theories - that have the power to predictively guide our search for more. Science and Art are complementary, but intrinsically different in world view. A talented and balanced individual learns to embrace both.

    • CUTTING EDGE: We strive to be at the leading edge of ideas by harnessing our creativity via credible sources, that feed our curiosity to know more.

    What you will learn

What is the origin, structure, composition and dynamics of the Earth? What is the chemical make-up of the materials that compose the planet, their mechanical properties and how they operate and interact in different processes (e.g. weathering, denudation, plate tectonics, volcanism, metamorphism, etc.) over millions of years to yield the planet we know today?

    Instructor's Courses
My name is Stephen Mojzsis (pronounced "Moy-zish") and I am delighted to invite you to join us in this learning platform.Something about meLet me tell you something about myself. As a small child I was always intrigued by the question: “How do we know that?”. Beyond things like “why do we breath air?” and “how come it is warm in the summer?” I wanted to know more and more about the basis of our understanding; how do we actually know?. My parents fed my curiosity by supporting my enthusiasm for science, mathematics and art, and I try to do the same for my own family.I am enormously inspired by tremendous minds like Leonardo Da Vinci who celebrated The Science in Art, and the Art in Science, and Marie Skłodowska Curie who reminded us all to have no fear of perfection, you will never reach it. My inspiration is being fed by our great contemporary intellects such as Christine Lagarde when she rightfully proclaims that Leadership is about encouraging people, and Elon Musk who challenges us to not be afraid of new arenas.Educational credentialsAfter completing my undergraduate studies in Boston in 1988 and post-graduate work there in 1992, I moved to San Diego for my Ph.D. As a newly-minted doctorate in Earth Sciences, I spent 3 years in Los Angeles as a researcher before moving to Colorado where I achieved the rank of Full Professor of Geological Sciences.Teaching and professorshipIn my professional career, which spans more than two decades, I have taught over 4000 students of all ages, interests and capabilities. In our new age of remote and global connectivity, I don’t want to limit my teaching to local brick-and-mortar structures any more. My passion is global, and my mission is to share my knowledge with other citizens of the world. That is why I created this online institute for you, so you can be a part of the journey.Events, TV shows, journals, etc.My long history of outreach activities includes numerous television interviews and documentaries such as the PBS (US) programs Nova, H2O-the molecule that made us, and Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman. I was featured in the BBC series The Planets, as well many other international programs including in France, Canada, Japan and elsewhere.I also regularly professional research conferences where I present my new work and that of my large collaborative network, to an international audience. I also regularly provide public presentations in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia to various groups including College, University and Research Center colloquia, and semi-professional and private scientific organizations. The research results from my laboratory group and network of internationals collaborators is regularly published in first-tier professional journals including Nature, Science, the Astrophysical Journal, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Lithos, Astrobiology and many others.Institute level with world wide learningWith most of higher education transitioning to online formats, professors all across the world are asking: How do you convey your knowledge and experience via remote platforms such as this one?Rather than leading a discussion with dozens or even hundreds of students, each in their own, separate ZOOM-style video box with the strong likelihood they talk over one another, we offer downloadable material on demand that you can enjoy whenever it is convenient for you. We share science without a lecture hall and desks, to enjoy at your own pace wherever you are.I professor, researcher, and motivator who seeks to maintain the highest quality education under extraordinary circumstances, by improvising, innovating and pioneering pedagogical methods in the New Online World. Now that we have this capability, I can reach you no matter who you are or where you are located.Thank you for visiting me and I look forward to working with you.
