Description
What does a film director actually do behind the camera, and how do they do it?
We go behind the scenes to watch Julian Klepper - filmmaker and film educator - as he takes us through the world of directing film. Following up on his first class on how to make low budget films, in this class we'll go deeper into directing from the technical (e.g. choosing lenses, recording sound) to the emotional (directing actors, setting the vibe on set) as we follow Julian while he directs his short film, "The Moment".
Who is this class for?
This class is a must-watch for anyone who works (or wants to work) in film. Cinema lovers, aspiring filmmakers, actors and video hobbyists will learn how to bring more emotion into video projects and gain a deeper understanding on how great films are made.
For an immersive learning experience, Julian draws on examples from a short film that he wrote and directed specifically for this Skillshare class entitled "The Moment". We'll have a chance to watch the film, then dive deep into key concepts that are crucial for becoming an accomplished film director. Instructor's CoursesI'm Julian: a filmmaker, film teacher, and the human behind Les Tigres Productions. I direct, write, edit and produce super low budget narrative movies, which I call Smoovies. Smoovies are super short films that are both in part comedic and, part dramatic, and created to purposefully examine larger topics. As of 2019 various Smoovies have screened at the New York City Independent Film Festival, Austin Micro Short Film Festival, and The Houston Comedy Film Festival. I also wrote, directed and starred in the web series: Free Therapy, for which I graciously received the Webfest Award for Best Actor.
Being half Haitian and half Jewish, my work showcases worlds where diversity is paramount and characters often belie cultural stereotypes while still being funny and honest. I am currently making more Smoovies and writing an episodic feature while opening up a live music venue and teaching a comedy/drama class in Sing Sing prison in New York City.
I have spent the last 15 years trying to perfect the super low budget film. That's what brings me to Skillshare, to share how to make incredible low budget movies. If you take my class, I hope that you don't hate me (like my one neighbor who stares at me whenever I wave or give a head nod. He's intense, which I now that I think about, is admirable.)
Check out my website to learn more about my work. Why not check out a few Smoovies while you're at it?
