    This course will explain the basic concepts of network security including describing different types of network attacks, methods of detecting them, as well as mitigation techniques.

      IT network attacks have become so common, IT organizations can no longer ignore their significance. Understanding IT security and preventing attacks is very important. In this course, Network Security Basics, you will get a very basic introduction to IT attacks as well as how to detect and prevent them. First we will describe basic security concepts, explaining threats, vulnerabilities, and exploits. Next we will compare common attacks and then discuss some mitigation techniques. Then we will discuss the security implications of remote access into corporate networks and wrap up the course by discussing the physical security needs of an organization. When you’re finished with this course, you’ll have the knowledge and skills of network monitoring and documentation to understand how enterprise IT maintains IT infrastructure for optimum performance.

    Ross has had a diverse career. He has a Structural Engineering degree from Milwaukee School of Engineering, but gave up the career shortly after graduating from college. Beginning in 1997, Ross began officially working in IT, implementing and supporting a paperless work order system for a Natural Gas Utility in Illinois. Since then, Ross has spent his years teaching and managing data networks. Ross spent 7 years at University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, supporting and managing the large enterprise network. He now has returned to teaching at Madison College in Madison, Wisconsin. Ross can be reached at [email protected].
