  • Description

Industry pro engineers, mixers and producers Bob Horn and Erik Reichers return with their second episode of Mix Review! Watch as they take a recordist’s non-pro mix and import it side by side into their DAW, and show you in-detail, how they would approach the mix in real-time, from start to finish. Get priceless tips and see where the improvements can be made and how to make them, creating a true professional, radio ready mix.

Shot in Pro Tools, but applicable to any DAW, Bob and Erik start by playing you the mix of the song “Indiana” by Brandon Guyton, then discuss some of the challenges faced with the tracked material, and their strategies for improving it, as well as the direction of where they took the mix.

Bob and Erik start with the vocals, explaining what needed help and ways to go about fixing the issues. Then it’s off to the electric and acoustic guitars, and accordion, which proved to be challenging to make work in the mix.

Next, the duo tackles the bass guitar, cymbals, and violins, showing ways to improve them greatly from the original mix, giving them their own space, and that polished sound and feel.

Wrapping it up, Bob and Erik focus on master bus settings and techniques to give the mix a radio ready sound, followed by one last play through of the track “Indiana”.

Every good mix engineer will mix a given song to sound different by making different choices, but the most important thing you can learn from this is to never get in the way of the music. Bob and Erik do a lot of tweaking, but always with the song and the performance in mind. A wonderful skill and a lesson every engineer could reinforce always. Because without the performance there is little to mix.

I'm really loving this series so far and can't wait for the next one. Bob and Erik do a great job of deconstructing these mixes and explaining what they're doing. The difference between the initial submitted mix and their finished mix is really astounding. Admittedly they had some very well recorded tracks to work with, but still, it really goes to show what kind of difference world class engineers can make. The final product in this episode is a really nice sounding song that is absolutely of commercial quality. Truly magic! I can imagine Brandon, the mix submitter, has picked up some priceless tips from this. Can't wait for the next episode and I hope they work with some more genres - I'd love to see them work their magic on some electronica/synth based music.

like the first episode, i like the way Bob and Erik are exploring the sessions, I've learnt a lot. Many thanks, keep going!
