Burnt Toast is the working alias for Scott Martin, a Canadian–based freelance artist, illustrator, and co-founder of the NFT art collection Doodles. Scott’s exuberant but technically impeccable style is widely respected, and he has become an internationally known artist and freelance commercial illustrator. His art and his design process have been featured in numerous publications and campaigns worldwide, with a roster of clients that includes Google, Facebook, Dropbox and Red Bull.
Along with two cofounders, in 2021 Scott launched an art collection called Doodles, made up of 10,000 NFTs which sold out in minutes. The Doodles series includes colorful pastel-hued characters with whimsical and joyful expressions.
The key to Burnt Toast’s popularity is Scott’s instantly recognizable work, populated with characters that are fun, cheeky, and sometimes a little macabre, all rendered in his trademark non-threatening pastel palette. Scott’s college training in 3D animation and design is evident in his drawings. They start life as pencil sketches, then are refined digitally using Adobe Illustrator. The next step is to colour and add shading to indicate a light source. “I always put pressure on myself to produce the best work I can, no matter who the client is or whether I am creating a piece of my own.” says Scott. He names other contemporary illustrators as his inspiration, but is also influenced by the greats of classical animation.
