HSK stands for Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì, (Chinese: 汉语水水考试), which translates as Chinese Language Proficiency Test. HSK is China's only standard test of standard Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers such as foreign students and overseas Chinese. The test is conducted by Hanban, a non-governmental organization affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. The HSK test is similar to the English TOEFL test, and its certificate is valid without any restrictions in China. The purpose of this exam is to certify language proficiency for higher and professional education purposes.
