- Psychological Preparation - Learn how to increase mental awareness and observation abilities to increase situational awareness capabilities
- Psychological Preparation - Learn how to better manage emotional reactions to a violent encounter so you can focus on your defense
- Psychological Preparation - Learn how increase performance and decrease emotional/shock impact through visualization
- Preventative Preparation - Learn an array of preventative tactics that can be used to avoid violent encounters
- Preventative Preparation - Learn to be constantly situationally aware of your surroundings to reduce chances of facing violence
- Preventative Preparation - Learn how to verbally de-escalate a potentially violent person
- Physical Preparation - Learn an array of strikes and techniques that are foundational to the rest of the physical continuum component
- Physical Preparation - Learn a series of striking sequences designed for the 3 most common fighting distances
- Physical Preparation - Learn how to effectively and quickly defend yourself in a ground fight and quickly so you can get back on your feet
- After Action: Discuss the importance of mental and emotional care after facing a violent encounter
- Post Course: Skills taught in ANY course are perishable and will atrophy without regular practice. Use a proven maintenance program to keep sharp.

More details
DescriptionThis course is based on what we call the self-defense continuum, which includes a spectrum of non-physical and physical skills to be effective as a self-defender and includes 3 primary course components. Unlike what many think, good self-defense is far broader than just physical skills.
The program starts with understanding that the ability to defend yourself in a violent situation must be an unconscious competency, or what is commonly known as muscle memory. You don't have the time to consciously react to random violence; it must automatically happen, much like removing your hand from a burning stove.Â
Because of this need and the understanding that skills learned in all courses are perishable without regular use, this course is taught in a manner that takes skills usually taught in a manner requiring conscious recall and enables you to turn them into unconscious competencies. In other words, you'll be able to manage your psychological reactions to violence and deploy physical actions automatically and immediately.
The first course component gives you the tools necessary to:
Be clear minded
Increase your mental awareness/focus capabilities
Be relatively calm in a high-stress environment
Increase performance and reduce the impact of the emotional shock reaction to violence
The second course component in the continuum is about learning the array of non-physical skills necessary to avoid a physical altercation. These skills include:
Good prevention measures
Situational awareness
Verbal de-escalation skills.
The third course component of the continuum is the physical component. The foundation of this third component comes from Okinawan karate, which is designed and taught for civilian self-defense. This component includes:
Learning a library of flexible strikes and techniques designed to be applied to all self-defense situationsÂ
Taking the skills from learning this library will be used in learning a series of fighting sequences that address the three major fighting distances, including the ground.Â
Discussing the necessary post-encounter debrief and healing
The course developer and instructor is Jim Smoak, who is an U.S. Marine Corps veteran, a 25-year martial arts practitioner who holds black-belts in 3 different martial arts, a certified martial arts instructor, and a long-time women's self-defense instructor. Jim is also a certified professional leadership instructor and is skilled in teaching in live and online environments.
