  • Description

Production guru Tyler Coffin takes you on a journey into the world of Electronic Music! Designed for the EM newcomer, this series gets your feet wet with many of today’s popular electronic music genres, including sound design tips, production insights, as well as history to base your EM foundations on.

Tyler starts off by discussing the ideas behind the series, as well as how you’ll go about exploring the various styles of electronic music together. You’ll then create a “base song” that you’ll later morph into the various genres covered in the series, so it’s easy to understand the differences between them.

First up, Tyler goes way back and looks at the Classic Electronic styles of the 70s and 80s, including their staple sounds and production tricks. Next, the always popular House music genre is discussed and shown, including some different variations found within the genre.

Techno and Trance music are next, and you’ll learn about what makes these genres stand out on their own, followed by Modern Aggressive EDM and its hard hitting elements.

Tyler then looks at Hip Hop influenced EDM, such as Trap, and how it has roots in Hip Hop and how it has spread to other electronic and rap genres as well.

Wrapping it up, Tyler goes over ways to integrate multiple genre styles so you can blend the different electronic forms together and make your own unique mixture.

See the individual tutorial descriptions for more info. If you’re new to Electronic Music or just want to look at the elements that make EM genres different from each other, pull up a seat and watch “Exploring Electronic Music” today!

great start to understanding the history of electronic music.

I am a: Student, Musician, Bitwig Studio

Its a nice overview over different styles and their history and not an in depth tutorial on sound design etc. But for what it is its great! I liked the authors style of presentation and his variations on the base song sounded amazing. Not the usual 0815 tutorial songs. Recommended.

...then you lost me after base song when you did everything ahead and changed the instruments :( #theRestOfTheOwl...

I love this course. It gives great insight into electronic music and yes I know its just the surface but still, I wish I have seen this before when I was starting.

    It did what I expected.

A very easy to follow overview of Electronic Music-Styles - very good explained!

I am a: Semi-Pro, Musician, Producer, Beat Maker, Audio Engineer, Sound Designer, Logic Pro

The Author is very knowledgeable..Yet he forgets that this is a tutorial video.. all his knowledge is rushed and seems to be just showing what he can do..not how is he is doing it..Learning is a process.. What he calls tedious is what the learner needs

I am a: Professional, Musician, Producer, Beat Maker, Audio Engineer, Sound Designer, Mastering Facility, Pro Tools, Reason

great seeing how different styles and genres can influence a single musical idea

    I am a: Beginner

It's always useful to see how someone layers up a track, and this has some great sound design tips, but I don't think it goes any further than that. The 'Exploring' part of this never really goes that deep, and I personally didn't learn anything new about the different genres. Good as a beginners introduction to different styles maybe, but certainly not essential.

I am a: Student, Musician, Producer, Beat Maker, Sound Designer, Ableton Live

Does exactly what it set out to do - explains the differences in Electronic Music genres and gives you techniques & tips. Recommended.
