  • Description

Early modular synthesizers that once took up entire rooms are now available at our fingertips with modern DAWs. Though software synths often use the same knobs and sliders as the originals, all the controls can be confusing. But you can crack the code and demystify synths with these tutorials from sound designer and engineer Scott Hirsch. Learn about the building blocks of synthesis (sine waves) and how you can build more complex tones with additive synthesis. Then discover how to sculpt your sound with filters and envelopes and create a number of example synth sounds, including a synth lead, a rich pad, a drum sound, and a synth bass. Along the way, Scott shares specific techniques for synth programming using software synths from Arturia, as well as Logic Pro and Ableton Live.

After starting out in post-production at BAVC in San Francisco, Scott relocated to New York City in 2007, where he honed his craft as a film sound designer. As he obtained a master’s degree focused on spatialized audio in post-production at New York University, Scott embedded himself as a sound fixture among the New York independent film scene. While moonlighting in a 5th Avenue commercial post-house (Creative Media Design), Scott edited, sound designed, and mixed films by directors Rick Alverson, Joe Wladyka, Trey Edward Shultz, Andrew Renzi, Sam Fleischner, Pamela Romanowsky, Matthew Porterfield, Francis Bodomo,Adam Rapp, Lawrence Michael Levine, Jonathan Caouette, Chris Mason Johnson, Lucy Walker, and many more. These films played and won multiple awards at the Cannes, Sundance, Berlinale, Tribeca, and SXSW festival circuit with the films Scott worked on over the last seven years. After obtaining his masters degree, Scott went on to teach multiple courses in sound at NYU. Scott is also a musician and music producer, and in 2014 recorded a Grammy nominated album by folk legend Alice Gerrard. His first solo record Blue Rider Songs was released in August, 2016, and his follow up, Lost Time Behind the Moon in December, 2018. He has also performed on and produced four full length albums and several eps by band Hiss Golden Messenger. Scott is a firm believer in sharing his knowledge and experience through education. He has taught as an adjunct professor at NYU's Steinhardt music technology program, as well as Stephen F. Austin University's music and media department and continues to be involved in both programs.
