This online course is a journey back in time to Victorian England to explore how the author Charles Dickens (1812-1870), one of the most celebrated names in 19th-century English literature, changed the way the English thought about and celebrated Christmas. The Victorian period refers to the reign of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, which lasted from 1837 to 1901. This era is known for significant social, economic, and technological changes.

We'll also go further back in time to understand how Christmas was celebrated prior to Charles Dickens, and what roles the arrival of Queen Charlotte and the industrial revolution played in this holiday's traditions. This is what you'll learn in this course:

    • Learn about Charles Dickens' writing career, his relationship with Christmas and what led him to write Christmas stories.

    • Learn all about Christmas traditions in England prior to and after Charles Dickens, and how the arrival of the German Queen Charlotte influenced the way Christmas was celebrated in Victorian England. Christmas trees, pantomimes, Christmas decorations, Christmas cards... learn how and why these traditions were established!
