Description
Synth guru Tyler Coffin takes you back to the future with tutorials on Arturia's awesome recreation of the legendary Casio CZ-101/1000 synthesizers from the '80s! Learn all of its features and functions as well as how to make sounds with this truly unique virtual synth. These videos are designed for new CZ V users.
Tyler starts with a brief history of the CZ before digging into this unique model of Casio's classic synthesizer line. He then goes over how Phase Distortion Synthesis is somewhat similar to FM synthesis and even subtractive synthesis in practice, but covers the distinctions as well as what exactly is happening under the hood.
A detailed look at the front panel and all of its parameters is given, then it's on to the Synthesis section where you'll learn all about using the CZ V's phase distortion synthesis features. Envelopes and Modulation options are then revealed and you'll see exactly how to route them to make incredible sounds.
Tyler then moves onto the powerful Effects section and how you can use them to take the CZ V's sounds to the next level, by adding even more color and flavor. Moving on, you'll learn all about the CZ V's browser and its collection of awesome pre-made sounds, including how to add your own presets and get them organized for future use.
Wrapping it all up, Tyler shows you how to create three different sounds from scratch, including a fat Bass patch, sizzling Lead patch, and a warm Pad patch, that utilize all of the CZ V's features and options.

Excellent tutorial, covered all I wanted to know about this synth, very insightful.
It started great but the examples in the end are awful and not planned well (if ever!!). If instead the tutor analysed some factory presets, that would be much better. Anyway, in the end he gives a very good background. I suggest to read the manual after this tutorial and then start taming the beast ;)

So far, I've had a great experience with the tutorials and the books available here.
It's been a long time since I programmed and played a Casio CZ synth. So long, in fact, that I had almost completely forgotten about the "Line" interface and how the phase distortion worked. This video set was like a couple hour re-learning experience.

I was really happy to see this course in today's email, because I got the CZ V a few weeks ago and it's just not really been clicking for me. Unfortunately this course is barely more than a video manual where he just tells you what the features are. There's a little bit of theory on phase distortion synthesis at the beginning, and there are 2 synth recipes at the end - although the bass video wasn't really that great IMO. But neither of the synth recipe vids seemed very organized - he was just fumbling around seeing what he could do, instead of making a badass and instructive patch in advance, and showing you how to get there, illuminating the unique and powerful features of the CZ V along the way. But more than all that, what I really wanted, and what wasn't really even addressed, was how to approach the oscillator design to really leverage how they are setup. He tells you how they work, but doesn't explain at all what configurations of them would be useful for what kinds of sounds, or how to think about using them. It's that sort of information that you don't usually find in manuals, and that's what IMO any "synthesizer explained" video should be doing.
