    Description

Significant improvements in video coding efficiencies entail a corresponding increase in encoding computation and complexity. For example, very high quality encoding may only be suitable for non-realtime applications. As a consequence, video codec development will become increasingly optimized toward specific applications in future. Optimizing the efficiency of video coding requires a painstaking effort and a systematic approach in analyzing the coding performance using a wide variety of video content and coding parameters. Factors such as resolution, color/brightness volume, frame rate, and amount of information loss in video coding all impact the visual quality. The course gives an overview of the key principles of video coding and comprises 120 illustrative slides that are meticulously prepared to maximize clarity and accelerate learning. More specifically, it provides invaluable insights on the video coding building blocks, including

    • Block partitioning, intracoding and intercoding

    • Transform coding and DCT

    • Quantization and entropy coding

    • In-loop filtering

    • Video containers, interfaces, and IP transport

The instructor has published several books and many scientific research papers on video coding and streaming. He has developed 6 U.S. video patents that were licensed to industry and received the National Association of Broadcasters Technology Innovation Award for demonstrations of advanced media technologies. He has also conducted many custom video courses for Comcast/NBC, Qualcomm, Motorola Solutions, universities, and the IEEE, and has served as an expert witness on cable TV and video streaming.

Benny Bing has worked in academia for 30 years, and has published 20 books and over 70 scientific research papers. In 1999, Cisco Systems adopted 18,000 printed copies of his pioneering book on Wi-Fi to launch its first wireless product. He has also published a software-defined radio article for the IEEE Spectrum and was featured in the MIT Technology Review. He has taught custom courses for many companies, universities, and the IEEE, including 8 industry-sponsored tutorials for the IEEE. His 6 U.S. patents were all licensed to industry and he has served as a residential broadband technology panelist for the National Science Foundation. He has received several industry, research, and teaching awards, such as the NAB Technology Innovation Award, the European Interactive TV Grand Challenge first prize, 2 IEEE best paper awards, and the Georgia Tech Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning award. He is a certified computer-aided instructor, and has trained hundreds of engineers from China, Taiwan, Korea, India, Malaysia, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Chicago, Colorado, Atlanta, San Diego, and San Francisco.
Students take courses primarily to improve job-related skills. Some courses generate credit toward technical certification. Udemy has made a special effort to attract corporate trainers seeking to create coursework for employees of their company.
